CipherCities

CipherCities combines digital mobile technology and web-based authoring to create user-generated location-based games.

CipherCities was developed by researchers at the Queensland University of Technology and launched in late 2008. The project uses the web in tandem with mobile phone technologies such as SMS and phone cameras to to build interactive mobile adventures intent on connecting people with their environments and each other. The website is a repository for games, artifacts collected by users (eg. photos) and social connection. Creators say that “at its most basic, a game consists of a sequence of messages sent and received between you and CipherCities.”
